In truth, I liked it. It was a clear, light gold color with a big head of crisp white foam and a mildly malty nose. Taste was  mild. fairly dry with a bone dry finish. There was a faint, lingering bitterness. I give it  Three Stars 1/2.

For a brief moment, a humble, impoverished dalit couple from Bolangir district of Orissa, Lalita and Shyamlal Tandi, acquired national infamy. Why did you sell your child? they asked accusingly. The man, Shyamlal, squatting in a corner on his haunches, simply stared. Looking stunned, miserable and shamed, he was speechless in his defence. It was the mother, Lalita, who, weeping inconsolably, tried to explain: None of us would have lived, neither our daughter Hema nor us, if we had not sold her. She intoned repeatedly, We had no other choice.
No sympathy
But her interrogators were not at all convinced. Just because you are poor, it does not mean you sell your child. What kind of parents are you? Lalita sobbed in reply, It was because we loved our daughter so much that we sold her. Do you not understand? We sold her because we loved her. Not one among those who had gathered for a transient moment, like a flash in a film, in that unfortunate hovel, indeed could understand.
It was not so difficult when Shyamlal was still strong in body. They owned barely half an acre of an un-irrigated upland farm, and it bore for them most years just enough gurji or coarse millets to feed the family for at most a couple of months. But even this lifeline betrayed them in successive drought years. There was no regular work in the village, so they migrated for seven years to the steel city of Bhilai, in neighbouring Chhatisgarh. They were employed at a construction site, and built a makeshift home of piled brick walls and a stretched plastic sheet for a roof. Lalita laboured side by side with Shyamlal, and together they earned enough to feed their three children, and even set aside some money. Hema at that time was just a baby.

Their troubles began when the head of their elder, four-year-old son Harendra swelled alarmingly. The hospitals in the Bhilai steel plant were not open to migrant workers, and they could not afford the private doctors in city. So they returned desperately to their village. The doctors in the Titlagarh government hospital demanded such extortionist bribes to operate on the boy that they settled for the more modest demands at the Tukla village Primary Health Centre. The illness cost the little boy his hearing, and the family five thousand rupees of their savings.
Shyamlal returned to Bhilai, but presently fell ill himself with pneumonia. There were secondary infections and sores around his mouth and on his eyelids, probably because of malnourishment. He could not close his eyes, his fever raged, and he rapidly lost weight. Lalita was alarmed that she would lose him, so she decided to submit this time to the demands of the Titlagarh government doctors. He required several injections every day. The doctor wanted a hundred rupees for each injection, and when they begged him he brought it down to sixty rupees.
Alive and indebted
The illness ravaged his health, but he ultimately survived, debilitated, with recurring pain in his back, and unable to undertake hard manual labour as in the past. The family was poorer, this time by another 12,000 rupees. Their savings gathered over half a dozen years of uninterrupted family toil in the construction sites of Bhilai evaporated completely. Lalita had a well-off relative, Ram Prasad, also a dalit, but he was fortunate to get a government job in the office of the Block Development Officer. He lent them money to pay the doctors.
Since then, the couple looked for work within the village. People employed them for tasks like paddy cutting, wood cutting, carrying soil and grazing cattle. But employment in the village is irregular, averaging eight to 10 days in a month. There are sometimes two to three months a year when they find no work at all. And wages are half of what they get in the city. There is barely enough food for the family; it was impossible to repay Ram Prasads loan.
How did they manage with so little? How do they survive even today in their unchanged circumstances? The word they used when they explained to me was , in English. It is with that we live. When they earn, they eat better. They regard a full stomach as Gods special gift, but one that He grants sparingly. On bad days, they mix a fistful of rice in a pot of water, and let it ferment overnight. This is the food for the entire family.
As their unpaid loan to Ram Prasad mounted, with no prospect that they would ever be able to repay it, he suggested one day that they give him their younger daughter in adoption, and in return he would write off their loan. Lalita insists that he made the offer in kindness, and that he had no daughter, and therefore wanted to raise their Hema as his own child. Shyamlal was still very sickly. It was the decision of the girls mother to accept her relatives proposal. The transaction was recorded on stamp paper; the parents did not know what was written but they pressed their inked thumbs to the sheet of paper, and their daughter left their home.
Little is hidden in a village, and the news spread quickly. A childs sale is always a sensational story. The first person who came to their door was a stranger they did not recognise. He was fat and dark-skinned, and he asked them about their daughter. They learnt later that he was journalist in a local newspaper. Soon the story spread to the newspapers in the State capital, and then the national press. Within weeks, a crowd of senior politicians and officials reached their homes, and asked them why they had sold their daughter. Latika tried to explain, but they did not seem to listen. They went away very angry.
Ram Prasad was jailed for illegal trafficking for 15 days. When he returned, village elders accompanied Shyamlal to his home to demand that he return the child. He refused, saying that he loved the three-year-old girl like his own daughter, and was unwilling to let her go. But they returned with policemen in tow, and Ram Prasad reluctantly gave in.
What happened later
Years passed since I had heard about this story. I decided to search for the family to learn what had happened to them after the child was restored. I found their hutment with difficulty. It had the oppressive odour of long, unmet want and settled sadness.
I learnt that the child Hema was dead. Within less than a year of her restoration to her family, she contracted jaundice. She was too malnourished to fight the infection, and died quietly. If they had let Ram Prasad keep the child, she would have been alive today, her mother said wistfully. Ram Prasad has money to feed her. We have none.
No one visited them then, or since, except the local policemen. They came when they heard of the death. From the threshold, they saw the corpse of the dead child and the inconsolable parents. They just bowed their heads and left without a word.

Tracking travel data is part of my job, and I’ll admit that I’ve been selfishly happy over all the statistics about Americans staying home or close to home during the holidays. If the airports in Bangkok are still closed, Friday night, 16 hours later am I just stuck in Hong Kong? I don’t even want to begin thinking of how I’m going to get money back on the three hotels in Thailand I’ve already paid for (that all stipulate that cancellations less than two days before reservation are eligible for zero refund. And no, I don’t have travel insurance, as I’ve been asked multiple times today—I never gave any thought to such a thing).
I don’t want to spend a whole two weeks in Hong Kong, it’s likeable, but not that likeable. I’ve scoured for cheap (or even not so cheap) flights to either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. If need be we can scramble and put together a new itinerary, but seriously, everything in the immediate future is booked and the available tickets are close to $900, ridiculous for such a short flight.
I was really counting on cheap prescription drugs and a haircut at Toni Guy, but more importantly, my detailed eating list may not be realized and that breaks my heart. As much as I like Chinese food, I like Thai more. And I learned my lesson trying to eat Thai food in spice-averse Hong Kong last time I was there. You’re better off in NYC.
Wherever I may be the next two weeks, I won’t likely post much if anything. I never do on vacation.

Accompanying the exhibition is a 160-page catalogue with full-page color illustrations along with complete documentation on each work and scholarly entries, placing each image in context, by Drs. Carol Lowrey and Lisa N. Peters.

There are many notable and rare inclusions in the show. Among the earliest is a work by George Inness in watercolor, a medium he used rarely. A spontaneously rendered field study from ca. 1866, the image dates from the period that Inness lived in Eagleswood, New Jersey, where he completed his well-known "Peace and Plenty" (1865, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). An oil on paper portraying Montague Bay, Nassau, in the Bahamas is among Albert Bierstadt (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/Montague-Bay-and-St.-Matthew's-Church,-Nassau/7/1/)'s largest plein-air works. Showing a tiny figure walking alone on the beach while a storm gathers, Bierstadt perhaps created the scene to convey his saddened response to the death of wife, which took place in Nassau in 1893. Four of the images reveal James McNeill Whistler (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/Rue-des-Matelas/68/1/)'s dexterity as a draftsman and his love of travel. These works include two graphite drawings of Rouen (ca. 1858), an ink and wash drawing of London's East End towered over by St. Paul's church (ca. 1885), and a sensitively rendered graphite drawing of a doorway in Ajaccio, Corsica (1901). Among the show's highlights areWinslow Homer (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/Waiting/27/1/)'s poignant watercolor featuring a pensive woman gazing out to sea, created in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1880, and John La Farge (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/Study-of-Surf-Breaking-on-Outside-Reef,-Tautira,-Tahiti/35/1/)'s sparkling watercolor of the surf breaking on a reef in the South Seas, executed by the artist on his 1891 trip to Tahiti.

Two images by Thomas Dewing of ethereal women from the 1920s reveal the way Dewing matched the delicacy of his pastel handling to his subject matter, while three watercolors demonstrate how Theodore Robinson used this medium with a equal balance of spontaneity and control, portraying a Giverny scene of a girl in an orchard (ca. 1889) and two views of Antibes, created on his trip to southern France to restore his health in 1890-91. Five of the works are by John Twachtman (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/The-Windmill/66/1/), including a rare and large pastel he made in Holland in 1885 that relates to his prizewinning French period painting Windmills (1885, private collection) and three of the suggestive and spare pastels of the Connecticut countryside that reveal his use of this medium to create works that simultaneously bring their scenes to life and demonstrate a level of abstraction that other artists of his time did not achieve. Maurice Prendergast used watercolor in a work of ca. 1893-94 to describe the flair of two Parisian women who converse while dressed in the latest fashions of the day, while Edward Potthast's vision of the vivacity of the American beach vacation is fully expressed in Canoeing (ca. 1920), rendered in the same medium. Four watercolors reveal Childe Hassam (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/Old-Houses-on-the-Hudson/22/1/)'s long involvement with this medium, from Woodland Stream (ca. 1883), in which he followed the truth-to-nature approach of John Ruskin to the vivid Old Houses on the Hudson (1916), in which he expressed his veneration for the reassuring qualities of old saltbox homes set in gracious, accommodating landscapes.

Works by artists who were associated with the Ashcan School include Woman Dressing (ca. 1904), in which Everett Shinn's observational skills and humor emerge in a freely rendered chalk drawing, The Stroller's Sketch (ca. 1918), a pastel created by Robert Henri (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/The-Strollers-Sketch/26/1/) during his last visit to Monhegan Island, Maine, and Park at Gracie Square (ca. 1922), in which William Glackens returned after a hiatus to the urban subject matter of his earlier art, expressing the lively qualities of an upper-class neighborhood on the rise. Three drawings by Joseph Stella (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/New-York-City-Shopfront/56/1/) from ca. 1903, ca. 1909, and ca. 1930 reveal the masterful nature and broad range of Stella's draftsmanship styles and abilities. Yesterday, Rose (ca. 1908) is a drawing in charcoal by Lilian Westcott Hale, demonstrating the method of extreme precision she attained in the medium; she sharpened her crayons with a razor blade to alternate the varying thickness of the lines and strokes as is seen in this depiction of a young, stylish woman in a languid pose and wearing a dreamy gaze. Among the intriguing images included is a graphite drawing created by Edward Hopper (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/Horse-and-Buggy/28/1/) during his 1943 trip to Mexico, in which he drew a stilled horse and buggy, situated at the picture's edge and seemingly inattentive to their role as transportation.

Among the later examples in the show are an almost abstract image of a Provincetown sand spit byMilton Avery (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/Sand-Spit/1/1/), two comprehensive ink and graphite drawings produced by Thomas Hart Benton in about 1933 by for his important Social History of Indiana murals, and a work entitled Brooding Bird by Charles Burchfield in which, saddened by his destruction of an image portraying how a landscape looked to a bird that he had created in 1919, Burchfield recreated the image in 1963. Andrew Wyeth (http://www.spanierman.com/Works-on-Paper/Back-on-the-Island/72/1/)'s desire to "see the romance in the surroundings of the commonplace" is epitomized in his watercolor Back on the Island, Maine (1994), featuring his Alaskan Chinook dog Nome asleep in the dark shade of the barn at his Benner Island home, while the Fish House, where Wyeth often painted, is seen beyond a mossy slope in background. Two watercolors reflecting a similar sense of longing by Jamie Wyeth are also included.

Broad-ranging in their subjects and techniques and thoroughly researched in the shows's catalogue, the images in Works on Paper 2008 reveal the richness, inventiveness, and many-faceted ways that American artists explored the use of many mediums, styles, and approaches in works on paper.

Here's the problem with Changeling the new Clint Eastwood film starring Angelina Jolie, actually it's one of the problems, but it's the biggest, the brightest and the reddest -- Angelina Jolie's lips. Every single person I've talked to who has seen the film -- especially the women -- the first thing out of their mouth is what a distraction her lips are. One actually said, "am I making too much of this" which I have been thinking to myself over the last couple of days. As a feminist, I really try to see beyond the looks and lips but this film made it virtually impossible because they were so big onscreen and were a total distraction. I think this has become a real problem for Angelina Jolie the actress because she seem to be getting in the way of herself.

The lips are a reflection of the tone of the film which is a male interpretation of a woman, and Jolie is the perfect person to embody that reflection. She's gorgeous and sexy, yet is always seen through the reflection of her family. This could have been a feminist story -- a woman fights back after being thrown in the nut house because she refuses to tow the party line -- but sadly the whole movie rings hollow.

Jolie plays a single mom whose son gets kidnapped. (The film is based on a true story.) When the police find a child that is clearly not her son, but kind of looks like him they convince her to take him home. She of course knows that he is not her son but the cops need a win and they do everything they can to convince her that the boy is hers even though he's shorter and his teeth don't match. But nobody listens to her and they conspire to make her come off crazy. She fights back and goes to the press and the price she pays for speaking out is being locked in the psych ward where she discovers a whole band of women just like her being held for no reason other than speaking out against the police. One of her fellow patients is the always fantastic Amy Ryan is a weird perm.

She is able to get released by the anti-police corruption crusader Gustav Briegleb played by John Malkovich and then takes on the system and fights to get the other women released. I guess that fight would be too much of a leap which brings me to the second big problem with the film -- you never get the sense of why she becomes an advocate. You understand intellectually why she does it, but it never comes through onscreen. One minute she's in the mental ward and the next minute she's standing outside as the women are released. You don't see any character development. It just doesn't work.

There was also no energy in Jolie's performance -- she yelled once and cried non-stop but it felt that she was literally wearing a straght jacket the whole time. I thought that we would get to see the Angelina of Girl Interrupted a decade ago when she got committed but that actress doesn't seem to exist anymore as far as I can see. I don't know if celebrity and the exposure has restricted her onscreen but it kind of feels like it has. Her partner, Brad Pitt seems to be able to still disappear into his roles but maybe its different for women, especially those with big lips.

Do you remember your first kiss?
