(Spyro Gyra in their dotage.)

1970 to 1990.

The 70's started out innocently enough. Universities began to employ Free Jazz inventors in music departments or Black Studies departments. There was still a presence on non commercial radio as NPR hadn't yet chowed a network of stations for repetitions of All Things Considered and Morning Edition.

The rock scene was inclined to leave Free Jazz alone and industry arbiters hadn't yet come to any conclusions about what would sell. They may have been so swamped by the rock sales scale up that there wasn't yet time to derive working axioms about catalog development.

Real consolidations seemed to begin toward the end of the decade as recession hit and whole label departments such as the Arista Freedom division were toast by 1980, sucked into some strange morass of ownerships that began with Alan Bates in the UK as Freedom records and now vaguely belongs to D.A. Music in Germany.

The problems began after Miles shifted into the In A Silent Way model. Another jazz urban legend is that execs at Columbia told him he had to find something to move the boomers or his contract would be over. If so, at least it shows the Columbia suits had more acumen then the boobs at Atlantic who wanted Max Roach to emulate the Mama's and the Papas. They left it to Miles to reinvent himself.

Silent Way is still beloved by stoners every where and the Allman's do a pitiful cover of it as part of their current road show. The 'trippiness' and the guitar prominence did the trick as boomers saw all instrumental music through the prism of guitar flash.

A year later he followed it up with Bitches Brew, a hyper trippy mystical mosaic of all the new electronic options coming into the instrument market. For a while it created a fairly interesting sub genre with striking releases such as Sextant and Crossings by his keyboardist Herbie Hancock or an ECM release by Julian Preister called 'Love Love.'

This stuff was still mildly frightening to a really fat audience but it established some cred with boomers and suggested a handle for AR suits that would work with further dilution as proved by Hancock's poppier, dancier Head Hunters.

Within a few years you had highly produced and stylized Fusion conventions that were at odds with the boomer mainstays, electrified pompous folk bands that came from the 'street'. Nearly all of the initial AOR icons from the Beatles and Stones on to CSN and the Eagles were primarily home made things with a sprinkling of studio musicians in drag.

Fusion by contrast was the output of musicians with considerable technical training, mainly at Berklee. This polish would eventually be a liability as fusion became an item for the lonely nerd guy market or it sank into the oblivion of the Dance Scene bubbling out of Disco before drowning in the quasi muzak of 'Smooth Jazz' .

By the Bicentennial, Rock was already quickly sinking into bloated caricature of some form or another and increasingly cartoonish. The dumbing down of American Life increased in velocity and the cult of effortlessness and something for nothing became a national credo.

Oddly, the Euro boomers couldn't be more different. They were to be among the best friends Free Jazz ever had for a surprisingly long period from the mid 60's til the early 80's when nationalistic assertions began. My hazarded guess is Euro boomers had the brisk brace of smoldering rubble from a huge destructive land war as the back drop for their early childhood development and their parents couldn't avoid conveying the importance of stewardship and intelligence.

The strutting Narcissism of the Hitler and Mussolini regimes along with the manipulated stupidity of the enabling electoral constituents had to be a pretty compelling lesson with heavy helpings of shame and horror for the losers.

My online and in person conversations with Euro boomers over the years tends to bear this out and it probably has more to do with US/EU antagonisms over the years than is generally recognized. And the Nazi's had to be among the best indirect jazz promoters ever because they made it a mild crime to even own recordings. Listening was a form of resistance and in some corner of the EU memory it is still the sound of Freedom and Liberation. There are many indications that it also had a similar role for inhabitants of the Warsaw Pact over the long cold war.

There are some interesting irony layers in this. One bunch of particularly lethal and toxic narcissists gives jazz a beloved status on the Atlantic's other shore while a younger narcissistic and toxic cohort nearly stomps the breath out of it here on our own side of the puddle. Boomers tended to be oblivious to the older forms from the Big Band to Bop Period and utterly hostile to Free Jazz as it sounded 'angry'.

I actually bought Coltrane's 'Om' by 1972 still unaware of it's relation to my tenth birthday and the local swells in my town hooted with derision at what they called 'a buncha screamin spear chuckers' and these were people who idolized Larry Coryell and John McLaughlin.

One excellent way to get a bunch of mooches outa your house back then was to toss on Cecil Taylor's 'Dark to Themselves'.

This dynamic established the working environment for Free Jazz artists until the 1980s. Huddle around New York and hope for some label action, invitation to some Wein sham, a gig at a college or a few gigs from what there was of a grassroots non corporate infrastructure.

The Great Society legacy launched the National Endowment of the Arts and mandated arts councils in the 50 states was a very helpful income resource for much of the period and it hadn't been hamstrung yet by boomer neocons. This meant that there were a lot of stunning free events in the public square in many places around America, usually college towns but also in summertime community events in urban parks.

These public free events were called 'contact performances' in the EU and they abet audience growth by just putting someone out there unfiltered for randoms to just find. I was once such a random who got to discover Air in such a fashion. These arrangements also quickly made a lie of the 'accessibility doctrine' as I'd find when I ended up producing them myself.

And an ultimate endorsement of it all was a White House Lawn concert hosted by Jimmy Carter featuring Cecil Taylor as a principle guest with a stroke injured Charles Mingus in the front row deeply moved by it all. Wein carried the water on that one but I get the feeling Carter's people told him who to book and it wasn't Spyro Gyra.

"That was the best jazz concert the White House has ever seen. Whenever we visit New Orleans or St. Louis or Chicago, we go out of our way to attend a jazz concert or nightclub." Jimmy Carter.

"Cecil Taylor's five-minute solo was a measured dose of creative mayhem; a fleeting glimpse of some kind of genius. After the last note faded, Jimmy Carter sprang up from the grass and rushed over to Cecil; Secret Service men scrambled to keep pace. The president took the pianist's two hands in his own, looking at them with wonderment and awe. "I've never seen anyone play the piano that way," he marveled." George Wein.

Europe became the recording center as well with a number of labels in every country recording Free Jazz. While some had fairly checkered business arrangements and models,their AR instincts were surprisingly sound. The Romance language world seemed to have a better feel for the heart of it while the Teutonic continuum was more drawn to the mind of it.

But by the early 1980's it began to dry up especially among Teutons and Nordics as a nationalism rose and label owners decided to bet on their own. For most it didn't pan out very well as the actual audiences still wanted the Americans.

Here in the US, there was also growing competition from a rising of Euromutt Americans who wanted to have their new cutting edge forms of improvising so they could stake their genius territory. This culminated in the Knitting Factory period where these novelty acts tended to get more favorable treatment than the Free Jazz core.

The Euro's also engaged in unfair trade practices. A New York promoter engaged me to do concerts for Willem Breukers group and the Globe Unity Orchestra, (which at least had a stellar complement of Americans). I didn't have to pay a dime for anything, just find a space to park them in and keep the door money. I drew the line at the Vienna Art Orchestra and concluded this sort of stuff wasn't helpful to the Free Jazz core although the local media loved it.

But it would get worse yet as boomers aged into yuppies and needed some middle brow sophistication and elegant fern bars as the new strutting grounds for those who hadn't already left the game to go make families and vanish into suburbs. They rediscovered the older Bop forms and the industry groped for some thing to replace moribund fusion and turned to Wynton Marsalis and his boisterous combative booster, Stanley Crouch.

Some of the big deal boomer folk musicians helped by slurping onto the older forms as their own stature faded. Joanie Mitchell and Sting struck me as particularly odious but now it has become a standard rehab formula for your boomer rockstar has been.

And Stanley seemed to have a particular animosity beyond any need unless some of his targets laughed at him back when he was a crappy Free Jazz drummer and less than compelling poet. He went all out dreaming up a new attack doctrine that focused on authenticity, accusing his victims of being pointy headed elitists, wagging his tail furiously on behalf of teh stupid. The outcome was the lionization of Marsalis, his posse was even called Young Lions in some stupid excess of branding.

Newt Gingrich couldn't have dreamed up a better assault although he was busy gutting the NEA with Jesse Helms. Corporate Jazz land essentially tossed out a museum piece rehash of the Brown Roach groups of the late 50's. And the shit wasn't even as good. It came from a sterile core of virtuosity for its own sake. Wynton was equally deft at tossing out seamless warhorses from classical trumpet repertoire.

So there we stop at 1990, utterly grim. The Deep Ones are judged unmarketable and inauthentic except by a less interesting cohort that wants to replace them. But an unlikely cavalry in the form of Gen X was coming to the rescue in its odd quirky way.

In Hampshire Superior Court, a Massachusetts jury acquitted 19-year-old John Robison of charges that he set off explosives to intentionally cause injury or property damage. If convicted, the Amherst teen could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. Formal charges against him included one count of setting off detonating devices close to property or people and three counts of malicious explosion.
In 2008, a vendor of laboratory equipment that became suspicious about an order the teenager placed contacted South Hadley police. The cops, who went to Robison’s home, spent three days evacuating volatile chemicals, including some of what they considered “high explosives,” from the residence. They worked with the FBI on safely removing the explosives. Neighbors were asked to temporarily evacuate their homes at this time.
Robison, who has had an interest in chemistry since he was a young boy, set of explosions at the town landfill, in his father’s home, and in the woods. He posted footage of these explosions on YouTube.
According to Robison’s criminal defense attorney, none of the footage showed any property damage, except for weeds getting scorched and dirt in the woods getting moved around. The teenager, who testified at his own trial, says that he was extremely cautious in making sure no one would get hurt by his experiments. He also says he would not allow people that he considered offensive or dangerous to log onto a Web site that he created to promote his experiments.
Robison’s Massachusetts defense lawyer has always maintained that no evidence ever existed to support the criminal charges against his client and that both the indictment and the criminal trial should never have happened. Unfortunately, indictments can be brought against you even when you are not guilty of committing a crime. The best defense is a proactive defense by Boston criminal defense attorneys that know how to protect you and your rights.

Wowthe plot thickensnow the lawyer of the man who shot and killed Akons artist Dolla, says he was being threatened?..The AP reports:
[Aubrey Louis] Berrys attorney, Howard R. Price, said his client was acting in self-defense when he killed Dolla, 21, and fired at two other people.
Price said Berry feared for his life after he and Dolla, whose real name is Roderick Anthony Burton II, had an altercation at an Atlanta nightclub earlier this month
Price said it was a coincidence that the two men ended up in the same city (Los Angeles), the same restaurant (P.F. Changs China Bistro) on the same day and at the same time. He said Burton, who was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after the killing with a loaded 9mm handgun and a plane ticket, was trying to leave the city because he feared for his safety.
Price accused Burton and his entourage of being affiliated with the Crips gang and said that is one of the reasons Berry feared for his life. He said Berry told him that Burton threatened him in the restroom and followed him to the valet area and thats why he opened fire.
He said videotape shot at the restaurant will corroborate Berrys story, but that there is no video of the actual shooting. He said Berry, a music promoter from Atlanta, was at the restaurant on Monday for a business meeting.

Pedroia - Pretty big swing for a little guy

Peppers: Hey, hey. Careful with that. That's the most powerful tranq gun on the market. Got her in Mexico.
David Ortiz - New York will probably be very careful with Ortiz over the entire series. The fella they got to pitch to him, Myers, is gone, so they will have to approach with caution.

The outfield

Frank: [laughs] Y-You're crazy, man. You're crazy. I like you, but you're crazy.
Manny Ramirez - We like him, but he's crazy.

Beanie: What about Mitch here? He saw the wheels come off his life, guys. His whole world crumbled. Now he's the Godfather.
Coco Crisp - Another of the Red Sox 2007 before/after rejuvenation stories. Coco had a horrible offensive start to the season and is now whacking everything around, hard, and has amazingly upped his batting average from .210 to .270 since the All Star break. Also survived being hit by a mascot in a golf cart. Seriously.

Mitch Martin: True love is hard to find, sometimes you think you have true love and then you catch the early flight home from San Diego and a couple of nude people jump out of your bathroom blindfolded like a goddamn magic show ready to double team your girlfriend...
JD Drew - Apparently right fielders are hard to find, for Theo anyway. JD Drew, plainly put, is not what Boston expected.

Frank: Ill do one more! It tastes so good when it hits your lips.
Bobby Abreu - So did you know, Bobby is known as "El Comedulce" in Venezuela. The name roughly translate to "the candy-eater." Abreu received this moniker due to his penchant for the sweeter things in life. It tastes so good when it hits your lips

Mitch: So what are you? Campus security?
Gordon Pritchard: Try again.
Beanie: Jehovah Witness?
Gordon Pritchard: I'm the Dean. Dean Pritchard.
Melky Cabrera - Think Melky ever gets asked who he is when trying to get into a Manhattan nightclub?

Beanie: I'd like to welcome you all to the Mitch Martin Freedom Festival. Now for those of you who don't know who Mitch Martin is, he's the very successful, very disease free gentleman standing by the mini bar.
Johnny Damon - Someone needs to get Johnny Damon out of New York. He looks about as comfortable as George Bush answering questions from any crowd other than school kids. They need to hold a Johnny Damon Freedom Festival and let him grow his hair back. That's where his mojo is.

The bullpens

Beanie: Weensie, you're on lifeguard duty.
Weensie: Sir, I can't swim, sir.
Joba Chamberlin - Jabba, as he will eventually become known, is going to be asked to 'dive in at the deep end' and get some serious outs against the Red Sox. Sink or swim? Only next week's series will tell.

Therapist: Frank, this is a safe place. A place where we can feel free sharing our feelings. Think of my office as a nest in a tree of trust and understanding. We can say anything here. Frank: Anything? Well, uh I guess I, deep down, am feeling a little confused. I mean, suddenly, you get married, and you're supposed to be this entirely different guy. I don't feel different. I mean, take yesterday for example. We were out at the Olive Garden for dinner, which was lovely. And uh, I happen to look over at a certain point during the meal and see a waitress taking an order, and I found myself wondering what color her underpants might be. Her panties. Uh, odds are they are probably basic white, cotton, underpants. But I sort of think well maybe they're silk panties, maybe it's a thong. Maybe it's something really cool that I don't even know about. You know, and uh, and I started feeling.....what? what I thought we were in the trust tree in the nest, were we not?
Mariano Rivera - With impending free agency and the possibility New York won't pay 10 million to retain the services of an ageing, almost 40 year old closer, doesn't it look like, deep down, Mo is feeling a little confused right now? Maybe he is thinking of how he might look in another teams threads. Whatever it is, right now he is getting shelled.

Frank: Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.
Kyle Farnsworth - he may as well go to Bed, Bath, Beyond for the entire series, Torre isn't going to trust the man with the flattest fastball in Major League baseball with anything other than mop up duty.

Spanish: Damn, I don't wanna end up workin' at Red Lobster! Frat Brother: You already work at Red Lobster. Spanish: Yea, well its part time...dick.
Eric Gagne - Gagne is three or four bad appearances away from working at Red Lobster. Or pitching in the 5th inning with the Sox up ro down by ten. Either.

Frank: I had an awesome time! Beanie: I know that you had an awesome time. I think the entire town knows you had an awesome time.
Jon Papelbon - Papelbon is having an awesome time.

Mitch: I wasn't looking for a girl like that. Beanie: Well, Columbus wasn't looking for America, but that turned out to be pretty okay for everyone.
Hideki Okajima - No matter what the Red Sox front office says, they had zero clue Okie Dokie was going to be this good. It turned out to be pretty okay for everyone though.

Travel Gudie :

By plane

The Coimbatore airport is the closest to the hills at 3-1/2 hours by road. There are flights into Coimbatore from Singapore, Sharjah, Colombo and most parts of India including Mumbai (Air Deccan, Indian Airlines,Jet and Go Air), Chennai ( Air Deccan, Paramount, Indian Airlines and Jet) and Bangalore. The Mysore airport is about 5 odd hours away from Ooty by road (but Mysore airport is currently closed and only expected to open for light aircraft), and lies to the North of Ooty. The road trip is quite scenic from either airport.

By train

The hills are connected to by a nightly train. The Nilagiri Express (Train No. 2671) leaves from Chennai at night, and reaches Mettupalayam (which Indian Rail spells Metupalaiyam), a small town at the foothills of the Nilgiris early the next morning. The trainThe Nilgiri Mountain Railway leaves Mettupalayam at 7.10 pushed by a small steam powered historic locomotive that is a remnant of Swiss engineered trains imported in the late 1800s. The steam train is much smaller, and can only accommodate a portion of the passengers that disembark at Mettupalayam. A through ticket from Chennai to Ooty will ensure a place in the smaller train, although many prefer the faster route of taking a cab or a bus from Mettupalayam.

The steam train takes a very scenic route, and the pace of travel will let you take in the beautiful scenery at leisure with stops at stations for the engine to take on water(the journey takes about 5-1/2 hours compared to 2 hours by road). The train uses a rack and pinion system to haul itself up steep slopes, and also to prevent the train from sliding down when stopping. The train is pushed from behind. There are brakesmen at the rear of every carriage who will apply and release hand powered brakes individually for that carriage. The train often travels only at 5 - 10 Kmph, allowing some adventerous passengers to disembark from the train and walk along the train. This practice is not recommended and can be dangerous, besides there is a good chance that the train will speed up, and you will be unable to get back on board.

Mettupalayam can prove to be a bottle-neck during the peak season of April-June with cabs charging exorbitant rates. The train is often quite regular in this part of the country, and is by far the most comfortable way to get here.

There are other trains from Chennai to Coimbatore. The journey can be continued from Coimbatore by road, a 3-1/2 hour journey.

By car

The Nilgiris are in Tamil Nadu, but it is quite near the borders of neighboring states Karnataka and Kerala. The hills consequently can be reached from within Tamil Nadu by travelling up a heavily forested winding road, with many sharp hair-pin beds. The road trip from any state is quite scenic, although the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam-Coonoor-Ooty road (i.e. the Tamil Nadu route) is the most travelled and well maintained. All roads to the Nilgiri hills are toll roads, although the tolls are quite nominal.

There are buses and shared taxi vans that can be boarded from most parts of India to Ooty. If you don't want wake up early to take the train from Coimbatore, plenty of buses are also going to Ooty. From Kozhikode (Calicut) there are two government buses daily, leaving 05.00 and 07.00, travel time is about 6 hours. Mysore is served few times a day, too. Ooty is 284 km from Bangalore by road. The journey takes about 8 hours, depending on the condition of the road. One can take a shorter route for which a diversion has to be taken at Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary. This route will take you past the small towns of Masinagudi and Kalhatti. This route will curtail the distance to Ooty by about 50 km. Keep in mind that this road is closed at night as it passes through the jungle, so you may actually have to spend a few hours at the check post which is closed invariably at night. Only good drivers should take on this road as it is very narrow and steep.You'll find some eateries and a fuel station in the town of Masinagudi. There are some wonderful resorts around Masinagudi town where one can rent a cottage. These places are a good weekend getaway for rest and relaxation. There are eating places between Bangalore and Mysore, and within Mysore, but from Mysore to Ooty one should carry some food, as there are very few restaurants.

Distance from Ooty to various cities:

* Coonoor (17 km)
* Coorg (225 km)
* Kodaikanal (236 km)
* Munnar (282 km)
* Bangalore (297 km)

Look For These :

Ooty Botanical Gardens

If you are on a sightseeing tour to Ooty, you might want to visit the Government Botanical gardens, which were laid out in 1847.The picturesque gardens that are maintained by the Horticulture department of the state, cover an area of about 22 hectares. The Gardens have well over 650 species of plants and trees, including a fossil of a tree, which is believed to be more than 20 million years old. The garden is very popular with nature lovers and those who long to walk among greenery and see rare ferns and shrubs up close. If you are in Ooty in the month of May, then you can also be a part of the summer festival, which is held here annually. The festival holds flower shows and various cultural programs showcasing the talent of the locals and the renowned artists.

Doddabetta peak

The Dodabetta Peak stands at an altitude of 2,623 meters. It is the highest point in the district, making it possibly the best vantage point around Ooty. It is merely 10km from Ooty so you can simply grab your camera and head straight to the peak, and click amazing pictures of he valley below. Many say that on a clear day, which is honestly not that often, one can see far off areas, even the plains of Coimbatore and the flat highlands of Mysore.

* Ooty Rose gardens
* Wax World - (Wax Museum)
* Sims Park (Coonoor)
* The Tea Factory
* Boating at Pykara
* Falls at Pykara
* Historical Dam with Power station at Pykara
* Hidden Valley
* Echo Rock

What to Do :

Most travel agents / hotels conduct guided tour packages that will bundle you into a bus, and tick off the most important and hence crowded "tourist" spots in the area.

* Enjoy the weather.
* Travel in the Railway. The charming Nilgiri Hill Railway, blue and cream with wooden coaches and large windows, is widely regarded as a marvel of engineering.

* Go for long walks and hikes.
* Visit a tea plantation and if possible a tea factory.
* Travel the country side in a 4x4.
* Catch a round of golf at the Gymkhana Golf course (membership or introduction required)
* Visit the local Army cantonment - the Madras Regimental Center and the DSSC (Defense Services Staff College).
* Visit terrace farmed cabbage fields around Ooty.
* Visit the Mudumalai forest sanctuary (1-2 days minimum).
* Sample the local bakeries (Kingstar bakery near Charing Cross in Ooty sells sinfully delicious chocolate and pistachio fudges).
* Visit the Needle industries which is around 6km from maintown Ooty in Ketti.
* visit 9th mile and also the 6th mile where lot of movies are shot:-)
* Visit the Municipal Market and shop for fresh local fruits.
* You can get farm fresh carrot on the way.
* Horse back riding. It's popular here. In one hour you can go around the lake or longer rides you can visit countryside around Ooty. Some knowledge of horses would be good as the guides are local men who don't speak too much english, teaching is minimal. On top of the price you have to pay for guide. usd 4/hour.

Drink :

The Nilgiris is famous for Tea. Try Irani's on Commercial Road, famous with the locals.

* Eat. Visit Preethi Vegetarian Restaurant on Ettines Road, and enjoy delicious vegetarian food.

Sleep :

There is no dearth of accommodations, with many hotels and inns that cater to every budget. Accommodations are no more expensive than most cities in India, and the popular Indian hotel chains have a presence here.

* Hotel Savoy from the Taj Group is one good option.Sitting firm on a rising hill, the Hotel sprawls over six acres of landscaped gardens, offering colonial style cottages that were built between 1834-1865. Colorful flowerbeds merge to form a multi-coloured quilt around the cottages, adding to their gentle refinement and old English Charm. A quiet retreat, the Savoy Hotel offers a little pocket of paradise.

* Another excellent choice is the newly constructed Sherlock Hotel. It is a typical homestay with only about 10 rooms, but the location is magnificent - overlooking the entire valley, and the quality is high (including the food).

* Hotel Sinclair - Great view of Ooty and surrounding hills. 5 minutes drive to go to the town market and restaurants. Hotel has its own restaurant and a bar.

There are many other hotels available at Ooty that provide a decent stay..

* Sullivan court, Near Rose Garder. Expensive yet comfortable edit
* Hotel Maneck, Main Bazaar, 2443494. Very central hotel near horse race track with good economical restaurant on basement. Both hotel and restaurant are under Jain management. Rooms from usd 4 upwards.

The libertarian economist argues that the failure to fully transmit values and traditions to subsequent generations represents one of the failings of the so-called greatest generation: "Behavior accepted as the norm today would have been seen as despicable yesteryear. There are television debt relief advertisements that promise to help debtors to pay back only half of what they owe. Foul language is spoken by children in front of and sometimes to teachers and other adults. When I was a youngster, it was unthinkable to use foul language to an adult; it would have meant a smack across the face. Back then, parents and teachers didn't have child-raising 'experts' to tell them that 'time out' is a means of discipline. Baby showers are held for unwed mothers. Yesteryear, such an acceptance of illegitimacy would have been unthinkable. To see men sitting whilst a woman or elderly person was standing on a crowded bus or trolley car used to be unthinkable. It was common decency for a man to give up his seat. Today, in some cities there are ordinances requiring public conveyances to set aside seats posted 'Senior Citizen Seating.' Laws have replaced common decency. Years ago, a young lady who allowed a guy to have his hand in her rear pocket as they strolled down the street would have been seen as a slut. Children addressing adults by first names was unacceptable."

He continues his commentary: "You might be tempted to charge, 'Williams, you're a prude!' I'd ask you whether high rates of illegitimacy make a positive contribution to a civilized society. If not, how would you propose that illegitimacy be controlled? In years past, it was controlled through social sanctions like disgrace and shunning. Is foul language to or in the presence of teachers conducive to an atmosphere of discipline and respect necessary for effective education? If not, how would you propose it be controlled? Years ago, simply sassing a teacher would have meant a trip to the vice principal's office for an attitude adjustment administered with a paddle. Years ago, the lowest of lowdown men would not say the kind of things often said to or in front of women today. Gentlemanly behavior protected women from coarse behavior. Today, we expect sexual harassment laws to restrain coarse behavior."

More commentary from Professor Williams: "During the 1940s, my family lived in North Philadelphia's Richard Allen housing project. Many families didn't lock doors until late at night, if ever. No one ever thought of installing bars on their windows. Hot, humid summer nights found many people sleeping outside on balconies or lawn chairs. Starting in the '60s and '70s, doing the same in some neighborhoods would have been tantamount to committing suicide. Keep in mind that the 1940s and '50s were a time of gross racial discrimination, high black poverty and few opportunities compared to today. The fact that black neighborhoods were far more civilized at that time should give pause to the excuses of today that blames today's pathology on poverty and discrimination. Policemen and laws can never replace customs, traditions and moral values as a means for regulating human behavior. At best, the police and criminal justice system are the last desperate line of defense for a civilized society. Our increased reliance on laws to regulate behavior is a measure of how uncivilized we've become.

So, Edgard. Tell us about yourself.

To start, I want to say that I'm excited to be able to host an event like this one. I'm tired of that old downtown Boston club scene. There is a new and fresh music scene that has emerged in Boston. These kids come out to party, enjoy the music, and have a real good time. I've hosted several events in and around Boston, and I like the more "underground" vibes from these parties. I don't do this to be cool. I do it for the music, the people, to put on a dope party, and to have a good time. I've stayed true to that.

Some of my past events and collaborations have been:
SoundBomb Republik (Goodlife Bar)
Re:Fresh w/ Kid Sister (Z-Square Lounge)
Concepts Pre-Release Party (Z-Square Lounge)
Old School Classic Jamz w/ The Awesome Two (Z-Square Lounge)
Disco-nnection w/ Dj Supreme One Brenden Wesley (Middlesex)
H U M P 2nd Wednesdays w/ Stretch Armstrong (Goodlife Bar)

The list can go on.

I'm just here to host cool interesting events, hang out with some chill people who seem to "get it" and have a good time doing it. I'm a simple guy, with simple desires.

"As bars gave last call on Saturday night, a man in his early 40s was walking home through the Central District when two men, unprovoked, attacked him. According to a police report, a responding officer said the man "had fresh injuries to his right eye, mouth, chin, nose, and hands. I also observed that his all white clothing was splattered with numerous drops of blood. The man told the officer he was assaulted because of his sexual orientation.

According to the report, the man was wearing a white sailor suit on the rainy night. After attending Gay Bingo downtown, he went to Bus Stop, the bar on Olive Way, and left with a friend around 1 a.m. The two parted ways and the man continued walking home alone.

While walking east on East Columbia Street, near the intersection of 13th Avenuea block from Seattle Universitya male voice yelled the word A second man then yelled, Where the fuck are you coming from? The man did not turn around. He was proceeding up the sidewalk when the two men attacked him from behind.

The suspects began to punch him over and over about the head and the body, the police report says. The two male suspects repeatedly yelled the word throughout the duration of the assault, the report continues. Then the man fell to the sidewalk where he subsequently received numerous kicks to his torso.

Just shy of its 100th birthday, Fenway Park is getting a little work done.
According to The Boston Globe, "In a major improvement project underway this off-season, workers have removed a swath of about 10,000 seats from the lower portion of the seating area, dugout to dugout, so that the concrete underneath can be repaired and waterproofed."
After that's complete, the Field and Loge Box sections will get new seats, and more seats will be added to the stadium overall. Fenway has one of the smallest seating capacities in the league.
This upgrade could be the last for a while since Larry Lucchino, president and CEO of the Red Sox, believes the stadium could still stay up to par for another 40 years.

Fresh off the Boston Common and onto the uneven brick sidewalks of Charles St., the Beacon Hill Hotel Bistro is one of the first stops in this charming neighborhood.  Ranked as one of the top brunch spots in Boston, the Beacon Hill Bistro offers a fresh breakfast in a bright, cozy atmosphere.
Decor inside the Beacon Hill Bistro is simple, with tables lining the long and narrow space.  Light fills into the restaurant from large windows, accentuated by white walls, and simple tables.  While tables are almost on top of one another, diners enjoy a relatively private meal, but still have a chance to scope out dishes from surrounding tables.
The bunch menu is french-inspired and features yogurt and house-made muesli, a variety of egg dishes, lunch staples, with something for the entire family.  Recommended dishes include the fresh salads, the massive roasted mushroom omelet with comte cheese, and grilled chicken sandwich with pesto.  For those with a serious sweet tooth, dig into the decadent vanilla pancakes with caramelized bananas, which recieved gasps from the large party next to us because it was the item many wanted to order, but deemed too rich.
Also available are great cappuccinos, and luscious cocktails- try the classic bellini, or blood red cosmo- at $10 they cost as much as most dishes on the brunch menu!
