These tightly interconnected networks make the rapid spread of HIV more likely. In a study looking at social and sexual mixing between ethnic groups in men who have sex with men, H. Fisher Raymond and Willi McFarland, from the San Francisco Department of Public Health in the US, show that social barriers faced by Black gay men may have a serious impact on their health and well-being.

Black men are perceived to be riskier to have sex with, which can lead to men of other races avoiding Black men as sexual partners. They are also perceived as less welcome in the common social venues of gay men in San Francisco. In the authors’ view, the combination of attitudes on the part of non-Black gay men, friendships and social networks that are less likely to include Blacks, and the environments found in gay venues serve to separate Black gay men from other groups.

I logged into Yahoo! Personals the other day to note any changes and notice a few surprises with regards to the memberships. The first is, Yahoo has gone from 3 membership levels down to 2. Their Premier Membership has been removed and the remaining membership pricing will be just a dollar more, when compared to the old casual membership. Subscription prices are now between 13.99 to 25.99 per month depending on the length of the membership. The old Premier prices for a month ranged from 20.83 to 39.95. The features that where part of the Premier subscription level (which dealt with searching and rating matches) have either been removed or rolled into the existing paid memberships. The free membership as far as I can tell has remained unchanged.
The major surprise is Yahoo! Personals has a guarantee now. If you purchase a 6 month membership Yahoo will make you a 6-Month Promise. If you do not find someone special by the end of your subscription, they will give you another six months for free. You must have a approved searchable profile with a photo and must communicate with at least 5 different members each month to be eligible. Another nice touch is they will email your status each month to help you keep track of your eligibility.
It appears that the 6-month promise started in May, 2008. I am unsure why Yahoo did not promote this at all since few dating services actually offer a guarantee. If promoted they would have brought in more members and received some free publicity from dating blogs such as this one. Sometimes you have to wonder about large companies marking departments, it doesn't take much to release a press release.
Yahoo Personals promise is very similar to Match.com "Make Love Happen Guarantee". In fact it is virtually the same except for a few small details. I guess they figured if it works for Match, it will work for Yahoo.

The family was informed of this tragic situation. Some of the family members were at the hospital while others were on route at the time of Michael’s death. The call for help came in at around 12:21 pm and Michael was then sent to the UCLA Medical Center. The entrance to the emergency room was blocked off by security and not even nurses were permitted to enter.
Due to federal privacy laws, no specifics on this terrible occurrence have been revealed. Michael is leaving behind three children namely Prince Michael I, Paris and Prince Michael II.

This is so tragic. Where would music be without him? I can hardly bring myself to believe that this is happening. He was such an inspiration and for that I thank him. I thank him for giving people the drive they needed to move forward with their own careers. Someone who’s songs can uplift you in times of need. Thank you for breaking down racial barriers. He has earned my eternal respect. Michael Jackson, you will be missed.
I would also like to pay my respects to legendary icon, Farrah Fawcett who has passed away from cancer today.

Before yesterday I'd never been to the Marshall, Michigan, hamfest before. KD8HBZ and I had planned to go last year but we'd had to cancel at the last minute.
Earlier in the week things weren't looking good for this year either.
I had made plans for the 14th with my son, not realizing it was the same date as the hamfest. Then on Thursday evening he told me that he'd decided he wanted to do something with some friends on Saturday instead, which is fine. He's a teenager.
So that left me trying to organize something for the hamfest at the last minute. KD8HBZ couldn't go, he was in Lansing visiting one of the grandkids. N9BAV couldn't go, he was in Arkansas doing whatever it is rich people do with their spare time. KC9FZT couldn't go either, his wife wears the pants in the family and wouldn't let him.
Even though it's not that far to Marshall, less than an hour and a half, I just didn't want to go by myself. I thought I knew better than to ask my wife, she gets so bored at gun shows and such. But I asked her anyway, and much to my surprise she happily agreed to go.
The hamfest opens at 8am so I was hoping to leave Goshen no later than 6:30am. As it turns out we did manage to leave home by 6:30 but it was almost 6:50 by the time we had procured coffee and such, and were heading out of town.
When we got on the Indiana 80/90 Toll Road, all settled in and cruising eastbound, I checked into a couple of repeaters. It wasn't surprising when nobody responded at that time of the morning. Thinking that there might be someone else on 2 meters travelling the interstate I decided to try calling CQ on 146.520 simplex. I turned to my wife and said that there was no way anyone was going to answer, but I was going to call anyway. I was proved wrong when I was answered almost immediately by KC9MQN from South Bend. Over the next several minutes we had a nice QSO as Lisa and I travelled farther and farther east, away from his station. We were about 20 miles apart when we first made contact and at least 40 miles apart when we had to give up. Considering I was operating my Yaesu FT-7800 on 20 watts with a magnetic roof mount antenna, I thought that was pretty good.
There was very little traffic all the way to Marshall, and we cruised easily along at the speed limit, arriving at the show at about a quarter after 8.
The Marshall Hamfest is a really good show. There was a good crowd on hand when we arrived at 8:15 and by the time we left at about 10:30 it was packed. I had read somewhere that the hamfest is held in a school gym so I wasn't thinking it could be real big. But the show not only filled up the gym, it also covered all the areas surrounding the gym, and several nearby hallways.
One of the things that I liked about the Marshall Hamfest was that many of the tables, perhaps a majority of them, were made up of individuals selling their own equipment. I saw lots of neat stuff for sale. Many reasonably priced 2 meter units, and more than a few nice used HF rigs. Test equipment, amps, you name it, it was there. Unfortunately I didn't think to take any pictures. I also ran into some people that I knew, like N8AES. Although I'd talked to him on the air many many times, we'd never met in person and it was nice to "put a face with the voice".
I could have spent all day just looking and browsing, but by 10:30 Lisa was getting bored, I had what I needed, and we were both starting to get hungry. So we decided to go.
Earlier, while we were on the way to Marshall, we noticed that the exit for M60 was only a few miles south of town. We decided to follow M60 west on the way home and stop off in Three Rivers, Michigan, to visit one of our favorite stores.
